One of the first big items we booked after our engagement was our photographer. You want to make sure that you have someone you love locked down for your big day (and boy do they book up fast). To put things into perspective, we booked our photographer around March 2015, for our wedding in August 2016 (and some dates were already unavailable at the point). I think you get the gist here.
When I found out that engagement photos were included as part of our wedding photography package, I was thrilled and so excited. Pat and I have been together for over 3 years, but have no real “professional” pictures with each other. This would be the first time we’d have some real frame worthy shots to hang in our home!
So, I immediately started searching the internet for inspiration for our shoot. Mainly, what to wear. I’ve read so much on this topic that I could probably write a book at this point. Today, I’m sharing my own personal tips, thought processes and experiences.
1- Feel comfortable in your own skin
Don’t be something you’re not! Be true to yourself and it’ll shine through in your photos.
2- Steer clear of loud clothing prints
I recommend choosing clothing that’s solid prints with less distracting patterns. Solids are known to photograph better and more crisp.
3- Accessorize with a few good statement pieces
Pick a few statement pieces like a chunky necklace/bracelet. These will show up well in photos. Dainty jewelry may not show up as well and defeats the purpose of accessorizing in the first place.
4- Professional hair & makeup is NOT necessary
In my opinion, you don’t need to pay for professional hair/makeup. Keep it simple and do a look that makes you look natural. I did loose curls and a light makeup look.
5- Have fun and show the love!
Have so much fun with your significant other during this special time. Your love and energy will shine through in your photos.
6- Include your furry friend
If you’re on the fence about including your family pet in your photos, do it! I was nervous about including Brody in our photos initially but I’m so happy we did. Do a bunch of photos with your pet at the end of the shoot so you don’t need to worry about your outfit getting dirty or material getting pulled.
If you’re getting married in the New Jersey area, I highly recommend Anthony Ziccardi Studios. We were so happy with our photographer Joe. He is super talented and made us feel very comfortable during our shoot.
P.S. – I couldn’t resist sharing a few of my favorite shots from our shoot. They make me so happy!
